Trump Survives Assassination attempt

July 16th, 2024 - Donald Trump nearly had his life taken on Saturday, July 13th. After 20-year-old Thomas Crooks fired shots roughly 140 yards away from a rooftop, Donald Trump was struck in the ear as the Secret Service rushed to his cover. Approximately 10 seconds after the shooting began, Crooks was neutralized by a counter sniper team on another nearby rooftop. Immediately following the shooting, Trump stood up with a clenched fist and yelled, “Fight, Fight, Fight” to the crowd. Following a short visit to a local hospital, Trump made no significant changes to his schedule and proceeded to the RNC convention as planned.

Following the shooting, the Secret Service has drawn intense criticism from lawmakers and laymen alike. Thorough examinations of what took place are still under review, but Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has taken responsibility for the errors on Saturday night. Despite the security lapses, she has stated that she has no plans of resigning her position.

Various intel and law enforcement agencies have active investigations into what happened on Saturday as well as potential precursive actions, but no motive has been conclusively put forth. However, it’s been recorded that Crooks was a registered Republican who also made a contribution to the liberal organization Act Blue. It should be noted that there were encouragements this political cycle by left-leaning pundits and influencers to have individuals register as Republicans in the primary voting stage with the intention of casting votes against Donald Trump.

The attempted assassination has made way for a noticeable change in demeanor for the 45th president. Stating that “God alone” had saved him, Trump has made definitive remarks surrounding the miracle that was his brush death. Expressing his gratitude for the outcome on Saturday, he called for unity in spite of the upheaval that defined the rest of the weekend. Generally speaking, those in Trump’s orbit have taken a similar stance and echoed his sentiments. The history-defining moment on Saturday will ripple further in the months ahead but has already made a distinct impression on those affected.

JD Vance Selected as VP Nominee

July 17th, 2024 - JD Vance is now the Vice Presidential nominee on the Trump ticket for November. After lengthy deliberation by Trump and those in his camp, the official announcement came via a TruthSocial post on Monday afternoon.

This pick underscores Trump's intention to gain a deeper fire among those within his base, in addition to getting a greater edge with the scores of blue-collar workers who have voted for Democrats in the past. Vance is a venture capitalist who has done work for and is now supported by the prominent VC Peter Thiel. He is also the author of the best-selling memoir Hillbilly Elegy, which has resonated in several circles, including those within the Rust Belt. His political rise came to be through his election to the U.S. Senate in 2022, where he openly stated that he would not have won his primary without the support of Trump. Contrasting this statement with the negative remarks made by Vance in 2015-2016 regarding Trump, there has been a definitive shift towards the same united vision that’s now put forth by both candidates.

Vance possesses several characteristics advantageous to the Trump campaign. Being 39, Vance is seen by many as a legacy play where a potential 12-year run of Trump-influenced judicial picks, legislation, and handling of foreign affairs is fulfilled. Additionally, there has been no shortage of policy alignments with Trump. With a Senate seat to show for it, Vance has not been shy of announcing his views on southern border politics, jobs being lost overseas, and foreign threats, which blends well with Trump’s message. Perhaps his greatest asset to the Trump camp is his story, where he has openly stated that obstacles he faced growing up are the same dilemmas currently disenfranchising many, as he proclaimed his hope for restoration of what has been lost.

Biden Considering Dropping Out - Reports

July 19th, 2024 - Joe Biden is now considering stepping aside from further presidential ambitions, according to multiple reports. Various sources state the health of the president and the mistakes that he and his campaign have made recently as one of the key factors, with the past month being widely considered a loss. Many on both sides of the political divide point to his failings in his first presidential debate with Donald Trump, his timeliness and poor speeches at the NATO conference, and his verbal tirades of inflammatory rhetoric that some feel have fed into an attempted assassination on the life of his opponent.

As of Thursday, former President Barack Obama has been more forthcoming about his thoughts on a Biden presidency. Directly stating that Biden needs to “consider the viability of his campaign,” Obama was clear in his wish for all options to be on the table but also stressed that the decision needed to be Biden’s. Obama has not been alone in the reassessment of the Biden campaign, as others in Democratic leadership, like Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, have held private meetings with the 46th president about the feasibility of running again. With only one month until the convention, Biden's allies and detractors are now clamoring for more answers, given the events of the past month.

As of Friday afternoon, there are now a total of 30 Democrats within the US House and Senate who are calling on Biden to not pursue another term for the presidency. Conversely, Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon emphatically stated Friday morning that the president is “absolutely” in the race. Although the polling aggregate Real Clear Politics shows a notable lead for Trump in every battleground state, there are still those in the Democratic leadership who believe that Trump can be beaten given the appropriate matchup.

Classified Documents Case Against Trump Dropped

Michael Conroy - AP

July 17th, 2024 - Judge Eileen Cannon rejected the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump, a decision that temporarily stopped what was considered by many political pundits to be the biggest indictment against Trump. Special counsel Jack Smith, who led the investigation, has appealed the ruling, which ultimately creates a path toward a potential Supreme Court hearing.

Judge Cannon issued a 93-page ruling that pointed to Smith's appointment as special counsel, contrary to the US Constitution. The judge stated that Smith's direct appointment by Attorney General Merrick Garland, without presidential nomination and Senate confirmation, violated constitutional protocols. This reasoning has been strongly contested by Trump's legal team and is expected to be a focal point in the forthcoming appeals.

Obstacles have been part and parcel with the indictment, as the “fast-track” plan towards appealing to the Supreme Court did not work for Smith, along with an assortment of counters throughout the legal process by the Trump legal counsel team. While the appeal's outcome remains uncertain, historical rulings in other jurisdictions have upheld the constitutionality of special counsels appointed by the Justice Department leadership. Smith's team is likely to leverage these precedents to argue that Judge Cannon's decision is an outlier.

The controversy surrounding the ruling has sparked a debate on whether the case should be reassigned to a different judge. Some legal experts advocate for reassignment due to perceived delays and obstacles, while others believe that the grounds for such a request are insufficient. This issue adds another dimension to the already intricate legal proceedings.
